Filter Premieres BEGINNERS' "Who Knows" MP3
Debut EP Out February 25
Download: "Who Knows" via Filter or SoundCloud
The debut BEGINNERS EP will be released on March 25. Filter has premiered "Who Knows" from the EP and said, "The single offer us a catchy, pop melody with universally relatable lyrics. Samantha Barbera's alluring voice shines alongside the electronic beats and the wind-like echoes will have you singing, humming and whistling with them."The track is also available to download on SoundCloud.
BEGINNERS was born in Los Angeles' Wiltern Theater, where after years apart, Samantha Barbera and Nick Ruth reunited to support their former Malbec drummer as he played with his new band, Foster the People. It was that night that Barbera, songwriter and singer/bassist in hardcore punk band Holy Fever, and Ruth who had been producing artists including Mikky Ekko and Active Child decided to work together once again. What started as a genre-agnostic bedroom recording experiment quickly became BEGINNERS.
"Within an hour of writing, we knew we had tapped into something special. And in just a few months, we had written, recorded and mixed an entire EP, just the two of us, all in Nick's house."
What emerged from that experiment are songs driven by Barbera's swampy, attitude soaked vocals, ala Karen O, with production fit to live on Violator. BEGINNERS deliver well-crafted elements of garage rock with dark electronic pop hooks that are alluring to a broad audience, yet smart enough for the pickiest connoisseurs. A new favorite record for fans of Cults, Phantogram, Santigold, Tegan and Sara and Chromatics.
The BEGINNERS EP is mesmerizing and unexpected from front to back, from the gigantic hooks of "Who Knows" to the uncomfortably honest lyricism of "Let Go or Get Dragged" which has you dancing your way through a movie you shouldn't be allowed to watch, but can't look away from. Far from predictable, "So Close I Almost Believed It" combines swampy, bluesy verses with a power ballad chorus straight out of a 80s John Hughes movie, only to descend into an extended outro that could make Johnny Marr blush. And lest one think Barbera has forsaken her roots, the raw garage riffs of "Ever Love" prove otherwise, coming alive onstage, where she's backed by her Holy Fever bandmate Neeraj Kane (The Hope Conspiracy) and drummer Jason Walker (The Gamits).
